“This Hat” took its first breath on September 21st, 2004.  I was in Taos, NM with a group of friends, and we found a shop filled with things we could put on our heads, faces, and hands.  Of course we started taking photographs inside the shop… luckily the shop lady was more entertained with our tourist like antics than she was annoyed by them.  (And we did buy souvenirs.)  I dunno.  People make fun of tourists and their cameras, and the hokey poses in front of statues, restaurants, and phone booths, but is any of that any more silly or absurd than being bothered by that sort of harmless activity?  I think not.
