So I’m hopelessly addicted to Rock Band. It’s fun, I’ll admit it. But I also have no disillusions about the fact that I am playing Rock Band specifically because I lack the requisite skills to play a real instrument. I do not brag about my in game conquests, “mad skillz”, or awesome new “drum heads”. (I also don’t enter Rock Band competitions, and if I did, I wouldn’t claim to have entered a Battle of the Bands competition.) In some ways I actually think air guitar is closer to an art form than the plastic guitar game genre is. With the air guitar, you don’t have a screen with scrolling dots and lines telling you what to do and when to do it. You have no boxish hunk of plastic to hide behind. It’s all about rocking out and praying nobody sees you when you slide across the kitchen floor and smash your air Les Paul against the side of the ‘fridge. (Not that I do that or anything…) But yeah, Rock Band – and Guitar Hero – is fun, but it makes me laugh how seriously some people take it. |
