I wanted to dedicate my 100th comic to two things I hold dear to my soul: Science and Dumbassery. Making fun of string theory fitted that bill. I used to know a guy who was OBSESSED with string theory. Preached it like the word of a gospel. Really, string theory is the conspiracy of choice for people who get a hard on thinking they know something about physics. I used to be polite about thinking less of people for wasting brain cells on thinking about the subject at all, hid the fact that I equated string theory to mere mental masturbation. The attempt to conceal my condescension lasted about ten minutes. The problem is that once I started speaking up, I realized that the “string theory is stupid” camp is just as “hipster” as the “string theory rulez” camp. Fuck! The good news is I think I picked the higher IQ team. But now I just keep my mouth shut or try to change the subject to tessellated Subway cheese wedges or something if string theory comes up. (Really, I try to keep the company of individuals who I can rely on not to bring string theory up. Prevention is better than a cure!) |
